VOWING TO DO A MAKATI

He was not born with a silver spoon, but Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay has
been king of the Philippines’ financial district and home of some of the
country’s richest families for more than two decades. Now the vice
presidential candidate of former president Joseph Estrada’s ticket, Binay
vows to help the next Chief Executive of the Philippines make the country
as prosperous as Makati.
The mayor talks about his brand of politics and style of governance this
Wednesday on ‘Probe Profiles.’
Binay tells Probe Profiles’ host Cheche Lazaro why he –- once called
“Jojobama” or the Philippine version of US President Barack Obama –-
suddenly abandoned his presidential ambition and deferred to Joseph
Estrada, who is staging a Palace comeback. Adopting Estrada’s pro-poor
platform, Binay shares his life story which has endeared him to Makati’s
masses since 1986.
Lazaro probes into allegations that Binay used his post to enrich himself.
She also looks at the so-called Binay political dynasty, which, observers
note, may be in for a rude awakening come May 2010, when father, son, and
daughter are all eyeing elective posts without the usual all-out support
of long-time allies like Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado. Binay’s eldest
son is running for mayor against Mercado. Lourdes Locsin is seeking the
congressional post of her husband and a good friend of Binay, three-term
Rep. Teddy Boy Locsin, under Mercado’s party.
Get to know former president Estrada’s buddy, Binay, and determine how he
will fare as the next vice president of the country. Watch ‘Probe
Profiles’ on February 3, Wednesday, after ‘Bandila’ on ABS-CBN. Catch the
show’s replays on ANC every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and every Saturday at 12
a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To view this and other episodes of ‘Probe Profiles’ –

“Help the Philippines to become prosperous as Makati”? I tend to disagree with Binay. He sound as if he developed Makati. Long before he was mayor, Makati is made already and prosperous. He occupied the mayoralty when Cory became popular and he just rode with the popularity of Makati with its continues development. It was the late industrialist Enrique Zobel who played a key role in developing the Makati financial district which was a former swampland. He is the former Chairman of Ayala corporation and Bank of the Phil. Island before his cousin Jaime Zobel de Ayala. He was student in the school of hard knocks unlike his cousins Jaime Ayala and Andres Soriano who studied in Harvard and Wharton, respectively. It was this pretensions that endear Binay to the masa and be able to establish a political dynasty. What happens to the graft and corruption being accused of him and almost arrested if not for the lack of political will on the part of the government? Its the chance to prove that there were really ghost employees on the payroll of the Makati City Hall.
